Video Chat technology is finally easy enough and available enough for the masses. It isn’t the phone replacement everyone thought it would be. But like SMS, IM, Twitter, Email, Snail Mail, Land Lines, Cell phones, Newspapers, etc: more communication is generally a good thing and using the right format always enhances the message.
This week I got to catch up with the family and even read the kids a bed time story from half-way across the country. It was nice to have a few minutes that felt “at home”, and this was certainly the right format for the “communication” today (it sounds so cold when I say it like that!).
1) For those of you using Video Chat on occasion, when do you use it? When do you skip it even though there are no technical reasons preventing it?
2) For those that never use it, why? Is it a lack of video camera? No one to talk to? Prefer the phone?

Great idea. Ben has a really hard time when I’m out of town but this may just help some of that.
What kind of equipment are you using?
I use built in cameras on two macs, built in ichat software with generic AIM accounts. Nothing fancy at all.
