2) iCam’s latest update now lets you record video on motion and view it remotely on your iPhone. I hear it works through most firewalls that would otherwise block the video (nice!).

3) My favorite innovation in video, however, is USTREAM. They now have a free Apple-approved iPhone app that let’s you broadcast video from anywhere. This is truly amazing and will enable all sorts of citizen journalism. Can’t wait to see how this one unfolds.

In Al Gore’s brand-new slideshow (premiering exclusively on TED.com), he presents evidence that the pace of climate change may be even worse than scientists were recently predicting, and challenges us to act.

A must see.

This week I got to catch up with the family and even read the kids a bed time story from half-way across the country. It was nice to have a few minutes that felt “at home”, and this was certainly the right format for the “communication” today (it sounds so cold when I say it like that!).

So my question is:

1) For those of you using Video Chat on occasion, when do you use it? When do you skip it even though there are no technical reasons preventing it?

2) For those that never use it, why? Is it a lack of video camera? No one to talk to? Prefer the phone?

Wired: iPod Classic or iPhone, with Composite AV Cable

I just recently picked up an Apple Composite AV Cable for my iPhone (not to be confused with the closely named but entirely different Apple Component AV Cable for your HD tv’s). This simple cable is seriously a thing of beauty. All of the sudden the iPhone isn’t just your “typical” tri-purpose phone, mp3 player, and internet device …. but also a portable DVD player with up to 10 hours of movies I can play on anyone’s TV – wherever we are.

This is wonderful when we are visiting relatives and the kids start to get restless. It’s just so nice.

If you are ready to ditch the DVD (you’ve gotten rid of the VHS, right?) you could go pick up a 160GB iPod Classic. At 200 hours of video, I’m guessing you’ll be able to fit your whole DVD library onto it.

The results are in: I like Vimeo best by far.

• Vimeo: Uploaded quick, video picture is clear, there was lots of pretty graphics telling me about the progress, etc. I like the in-video controls.
• Veoh was second. Web site is nice, in-video controls are ok, and the video quality is nice. But the upload took nearly 3 times what the other sites did.
• YouTube came in third. Fuzzy picture. It’s got market share to be sure, but seriously, let’s cut down how many things are on the screen at the same time. I had to concentrate to find the upload button.
• Blip.tv came in last. The black first and last frame bug me – and it is much to small.
