Have Faith – We Are All Doing Our Best

At the Agile 2009 Conference retrospective, the Prime Directive by Norman Kerth was posted on the wall to help with the facilitation:

“Regardless of what we discover, we understand and truly believe, that everyone did the best job they could, given what they knew at the time, their skills and abilities, the resources available and the situation at hand.”

Single handedly, this attitude would improve countless work environments if people simply believed it. So often a job poorly done was due to limited resources (time, anyone?) but I like how Norm makes it broader. It’s good to remember and give others some grace.
