Hours per Week

Matt answers: How many hours should I work per week?

37signallers can set their own schedules but I’d say, on average, we work a typical workday (8 hours) and we don’t work weekends. [...] A normal workweek should be plenty. Even less is ok. In fact, being short on time is a good thing. It forces you to focus on the essentials. There’s no time for things that don’t matter.

My favorite part is the ending: “Worry about the quality of your hours, not the quantity. That’s what really matters.”

Agreed.

Cilmate Change Graphic

The United Kingdom’s Met Office put together this graphic on climate change. I think it is one of the most informative, succinct graphics I’ve seen in a long time. Very nice.

Complications, not Complexity

On Simplicity distinguished between complex and complications in No Greatness without Simplicity?:

[...] the opposite of simplicity may not be complexity, but complications. After all, are complex plots bad? Complex personalities? Complex philosophies? Not at all. It’s complicated things that drive us crazy.

Agreed.

In favor of online transparency

Seth Godin writes about Personal Branding in the age of Google:

Everything you do now ends up in your permanent record. The best plan is to overload Google with a long tail of good stuff and to always act as if you’re on Candid Camera, because you are.

Google PowerMeter

You can’t fix what you don’t measure, and no one measures their electricity use. I am pretty excited about Google’s new PowerMeter project.

Most people don’t know how much electricity their appliances use, where in the house they are wasting electricity, or how much the bill might go up during different seasons. But in a world where everyone had a detailed understanding of their home energy use, we could find all sorts of ways to save energy and lower electricity bills. In fact, studies show that access to home energy information results in savings between 5-15% on monthly electricity bills.

Very cool. I hope it will be available here.
