Review: Presentation Zen: Simple Ideas on Presentation Design and Delivery by Garr Reynolds

Just finished up Presentation Zen by Garr Reynolds. I really really liked it.

  • Merlin Mann says: “this is the book about presentations that’s needed to be written for years, and it’s just fantastic.” and also mentions it in How I made my presentations a little better (Merlin is the guy who put Inbox Zero together, which I wrote about last year)
  • You can also check out Garr Reynolds blog on “issues related to professional presentation design”
  • Or you can check out Guy Kawasaki’s interview with Garr, Ten Questions With Garr Reynolds. (Guy is one of the original Apple employees responsible for Macintosh marketing in 1984, has written 8 books, and is currently a Silicon Valley venture capitalist)

Housing, Thinking, Insurance, Mac History

* “The Joint Center for Housing Studies is Harvard University’s center for information and research on housing in the United States. The Joint Center analyzes the dynamic relationships between housing markets and economic, demographic, and social trends, providing leaders in government, business, and the non-profit sector with the knowledge needed to develop effective policies and strategies.”

* Systems Thinking: It is a unique approach to problem solving, in that it views certain ‘problems’ as a part of the overall system so focusing on these outcomes will only further develop the undesired element or problem.

* “Milemeter is a Dallas-based startup that will let you buy American car insurance by the mile.” [via O'Reilly radar]

* Find out the history of every mac product at mactimeline. For example, iTunes software has been updated on average every 122 days and was originally introduced January 9, 2001. The lastest version, iTunes 7.6, was release just 26 days ago. This is great for finding out if that new MacBook you want was just upgraded, or is due for a refresh any day now.

Taxes Done! Thank you H&R Block!

Just got the taxes done for the year. This is the 3rd year I’ve gone with H&R Block’s online software and I’ll do it again. To be sure, there was a small snafu last year in which H&R caught and fixed it themselves, but I have been very happy with the whole process.

Previously I used TurboTax for many years. And as easy as it was over traditional paper, the whole thing just felt dirty. I’m not sure exactly why. Perhaps it was the unnecessary charge for electronically submitting, or perhaps it was the rebates (I hate rebates – just give me the price without the paperwork). But for whatever the reason, TurboTax never seemed to respect me, or care about creating quality software. H&R Block does, and I like this quality for the company that holds all of my financial and tax information.

So, again this year, my money goes to H&R Block.
